I heard the orchestra return to Northrop for a single concert, ca. 1971, and I was shocked by how the hall's acoustics dampened the orchestra's sound. Clearly, Mercury achieved a triumph recording Daphnis under such conditions, and your CD transfer does Mercury's achievement proud!

Here is a perfect Sunday morning concert (compiled on our CD in the "correct" order: overture, concerto, symphony). Dorati's "New World" with Otterloo's orchestra, stunningly recorded by Philips in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, was a top recommendation for years during the mono era in an already crowded roster of recordings of this classical pop. Schneiderhan revisited of course many times this fascinating concerto by Bruch, but this is his first recording of it, on a very early DG, and so is Lehmann's riveting Romeo, also with the Bambergers (formerly the Prague German Philharmonic) on top form. Highly recommended!
