The "Italian" often suffers from overenthusiastic conducting, creating the impression of a Mark Sennet-likeĀ comedy accompaniment. Pedrotti paces the music easily. His timings are very close to Klemperer's revealing 1961 EMI recording. The Czechs have always been a world class orchestra and here perform miracles of sensitive and precise playing. In a world of truly great recordings of this happy work, Pedrotti's mono recording in Prague easily takes its place among the best. Cincinnati was lucky to have Thor Johnson as their principal conductor: theirs is a civilized sound, more European than usual, and Johnson serves the music with humility and sincerity -- a miracle in those times when diva-conductors held the field of fame and glory. A perfect pair! |
