Fritz Lehmann and his fine German orchestras will charm you in a versatile program of French and German overtures, a kind of compilation that once was very popular but nowadays has disappeared, which is a great pity, for a record of overtures was a very civilized way of relaxing while being treated to real highlights of spirit and form. Lost in his mid-fifties, Lehmann, much like Fricsay and van Beinum, was a great loss for the music world. On ths CD you have Auber Fra Diavolo and Le Domino Noir overtures, Boieldieu Le Calife de Bagdad, Adam Si j'etais roi, Schumann Manfred and Brahms Tragic Overture (with a terrific BPO!).
