Ormandy at his best also can be heard in pre-stereo recordings of Hindemith's Mathis der Maler and Concert Music for Strings and Brass, Stravinsky's Firebird Suite and Ravel's La valse.

Alice Heksch and Nap de Klijn formed in the 1950s the Amsterdam duo – a worthy precursor of Philips’ later Haskil-Grumiaux team, as stylish and as inspired as their famous successors. Heksch recorded for the (then) Dutch label some Mozart concertos too, rare and much sought after. Here she plays a beautifully sounding "Mozart-piano", viz. a fortepiano, a practice rare for the period (and it does sound enchanting!) with her worthy partner on a couple of violin/piano sonatas by Mozart. We thought it was worth supplementing this compilation with two lost Boccherini recordings of the same vintage. The Grutzmacher version of the well known “cello concerto” played by the forgotten Hungarian cellist Leo Koscielny and conducted by the eminent Hans Rosbaud and a delightful string quartet played masterly by an little known and short-lived ensemble of well-known soloists of that era.
