Surprisingly the mono catalog contained many more less-known works than we thought it did. Concert Hall and Vox (to name but two labels) were heroically exploring unknown territories and adventurous record collectors could boast during the eraly 1950s Tchaikovsky’s “Polish” symphony, recorded at a time when for most of us there were only three great symphonies of the Russian Master, the 4th, 5th and 6th. Swoboda is served very well by Concert Hall’s lively recording and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra come out loud, clear and very much enjoying the rarely heard pages of the 3rd Symphony. Zoltan Fekete directs the same forces in a dramatic and engaging performance of one of the composer’s least known symphonic poems. Rare and very entertaing.
