The Rumanian Otto Ackermann was engaged by Legge along with Galliera, Dobrowen and Kletzki to shape his newly founded Philharmonia . For Decca he recorded during the early 1950s this very fine Freischutz with the VPO and an excellent duo of sopranos in the main roles and the Wagnerian tenor Hans Hopf in the protagonist’s part. This can be found elsewhere, as collectors will know, but nowhere sounding as good as here. Furthermore we have accommodated Acts 1 & 2 on the first CD, leaving space on CD 2, after the concluding act, for a batch of brilliantly played Weber overtures, the VPO led this time by Karl Bohm. Worth trying – and a very satisfying Freischutz (for once sung rather than barked) – typically Viennese and rooted on firm tradition. |
