I took the Ravel Daphnis with me on vacation to make the tracking: I used the Munch/Boston from 1955 to compare tracks. There are certainly on some places in the Boston Orchestra "better" players, but as a whole the Munch sounds nearly dull compared to Dorati. His performance has so much more tension !!

Well into the 1960s this continued to be a reference recording of the Brandenburgs challenged only by the appearance of Adolph Scherbaum's high trumpet solos in subsequent issues. Looking at the stunning roster of soloists participating in this pioneering effort to "historical" techniques, one can only see why: Jean Pougnet, Georges Tessier and Emmanuel Hurwitz among the violins, Anthony Pini among the cellos, Frederick Riddle among the violas, Richard Adeney flute and Carl Dolmetsch recorder, Syndey Sutcliff among the oboes, Philip Jones trumpet and Robert Veyron-Lacroix with Lionel Salter at the harpsichords. The bomb-proof hard jacket of the original Westminster LP set was accompanied by a two volume miniature score of the works! We coupled our double CD set with pioneering recordings of two of Bach's harpsichord concertos by the great Isolde Ahlgrim and a very fine body of Viennese players under Erich Fiala. Essential.
