You have remastered Graffman's Chopin Ballades superbly .... the sound is much more nuanced and three-dimensional than that on the original Lp (USA RCA Victrola Plum Label), an Lp that I owned back in the 1960s. As you used that very same Lp as your source, I can only express astonishment at how much better your CD sounds!

A long cherished dream, this was a total loss! My LPs were damaged beyond repair but recently I got a near mint set from a fine Dutch collector and never mind the cost! Lehmann was in many ways a German counterpart of Eduard van Beinum. A truly great conductor, a serious professional and not a "star", who, like so many of their age, was capable of turning marvelous renditions of almost anything. Like Beinum he was privileged to work with a very fine orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic (at that time still Furtwangler's, not Karajan's orchestra). And like Beinum he came to an untimely death before he reached 60. He actually died during this recording, having committed to tape the four of the six cantatas forming this happy oratorio, and the project was to be aborted; but the orchestra and all involved in it decided to finish the recording, so some months after Lehmann's early demise, the chorus director, Gunther Arndt, carried it to completion. Those of you who have known Lehmann from the mono era, will know the recording, and like me, must have gnawed their fingernails when DG issued only the first two cantatas on their "Originals" series. This was (still is) most frustrating. Because this is a marvelous recording and should be always available. Until a miracle happens, here is a fine transfer for the discerning collector. Glorious!
