Both as sound and interpretation these old mono recordings from the glorious past of Wilma Cozart's Mercuries is reborn here in a perfect team and a CD you will play again and again for sheer pleasure. Dorati has done a complete Firebird with the LSO which has a place in the Hall of Fame of the work's recordings, but here in his first foray for the gramophone, he shows he already was an old hand in this repertory, having learned the trade at Diaguilev's Ballets Russes. He also did a stereo remake of Le Sacre, which luckily was transferred on CD - yet his first 1954 recording has a freshness and a naturalness hard to find again. A bombshell.
