Here is a very welcome combination of two of the rare Fistoulari purely symphonic recordings, the delightful Tempest (rarely heard) and a truly great in all counts Tchaikovsky 4. Very idiomatic as expected, less germanic and paced much more comfortably than Szell's celebrated LSO recording for DECCA, this will show what a shame it's been that Fistoulari wasn't signed to record more of these works he was so akin with. The delectable symphonic poem The Tempest, not such a great favorite as Romeo or Francesca, is an impressive sea-scape played thrillingly by the Philharmonia some years earlier. And in both cases the sound of the late lamented Kingsway Hall is a vital element. Stunning stereo sound. Great renditions both forming a most desirable set. |
